7 Things to Know Before Using Hair Clippers to Cut Your Own Hair

1. Decide what style you want.  A crew cut is a common hairstyle with many variations, so think about what you want the end result to be before you start cutting.

2. Buy a hand mirror or create a two-mirror setting.  This is especially important if you're doing it yourself, as you need to be able to see the back of your head.

3. Use the bathroom as a barbershop.  Make sure the light is good and you feel comfortable in front of the mirror.

4. Take your time and start with the longest guard.  Slowly lower the guard until you get the length you want.  Don't rush to look at your head so you don't miss anything.

5. If you have to do it yourself, stand up.  You need to be comfortable, but also able to look in the mirror for details.  Don't try to do this when you're sitting in a chair.

6. If all this is stressing you out, or you get bogged down in the process, find a professional to resolve the problem, or watch a tutorial to guide you through the process.

7. Prepare for maintenance.  Just because you do it yourself doesn't mean you get free repairs.  Be prepared to apply retouching at least once every two weeks, sometimes more depending on how fast your hair is growing.
